Jason LaRose

CEO, Bombas

“You can’t start with what the fans want. You’ve got to start with what the players want.”

Summary

We tend to think of corporate giving as something that sits beside a business: a foundation, a department, a line item. At Bombas, it is built into the model itself. Every item sold means an item donated, so the only way to help more people is to grow. That makes growth part of the mission.

On this episode of Leadership Matters, I sat down with Jason LaRose, CEO of Bombas, the comfort apparel brand that has donated more than 200 million items to people experiencing homelessness. Over a career that spans McKinsey, Under Armour, Equinox, and beyond, Jason has spent years learning the consumer business from the inside. We discussed his vision for growing Bombas into a multibillion-dollar brand, why he insists Bombas is not a charity and has to earn customers on quality and comfort, and why he sees each purchase as a vote that consumers control every day. We also explored the four things he protects his time for as CEO, and why the best executives, like porpoises, keep coming up for air.

At a time when many people question whether capitalism can work for everyone, Jason makes a compelling case that a business built on values can scale, as long as the product is good enough to earn every dollar.
